land acknowledgement

We acknowledge that the land on which the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory stands is the ancestral home of the Klamath people, who have lived here since time immemorial.

In the Treaty of 1864, these tribes ceded more than 23 million acres of land in exchange for the recognition of their sovereignty and the protection of their rights to steward the land in safety. Today, the Klamath people are members of The Klamath Tribes and continue to care for this region as they have for thousands of years. We honor their enduring relationship with this land and recognize the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization, displacement, and broken treaties. As a center dedicated to exploration, discovery, and stewardship, we are inspired by the wisdom and traditions of those who have cared for this land for countless generations. We pledge to continue nurturing curiosity, sustaining our shared environment, and building a future rooted in respect and inclusion.

equity statement (interim)

At SNCO, we are committed to becoming an equitable, inclusive, and diverse workplace and community center. Our equity statement is forever interim, as we work to constantly update, evolve and maintain SNCO’s guiding statements to acknowledge, represent and support the diversity in all facets of our organization. While we recognize that we have not yet engaged in the deep work needed to dismantle systemic inequities, we acknowledge that doing so is vital and needs to be undertaken as soon as possible. We are committed to approaching the process with humility, openness, and a focus on meaningful, long-term change.

We are currently in the early stages of assessing how best to infuse DEIB principles across all levels of our organization. We are actively evaluating our current practices, seeking input from staff, and reaching out to DEIB experts who can guide our growth. We are committed to taking meaningful steps to address issues related to access, equity, and inclusion across all levels of our organization from our Board of Directors to staff; from volunteers to visitors; from our marketing and outreach to our physical campus; from our programming to our thrift store – we pledge to develop a comprehensive strategy and then implement it to create a more inclusive and just organization.

Our commitment is not only to start this work but to sustain it. We understand that it will require ongoing learning, self-reflection, and accountability. We will hold ourselves responsible by sharing our progress with our community along the way. We will pursue this ongoing initiative with urgency, intention, and the understanding that true equity is a continuous collective effort.
